Our research field is gastrointestinal pathology using not only human surgical and biopsy specimens but also cell culture and experimental animal systems. We adopt molecular biologic approach at genomic DNA and mRNA levels as well as immunohistochemical and histological approach at protein level. We are also engaged in autopsy services in our University Hospital. The autopsy cases are used for the case studies of undergraduates and for the basic training of junior pathologists.
Our main research interest is focused on development and progression of gastrointestinal tumors. In the analysis of carcinogenesis, experimental approaches for the development of gastric carcinoma and Barrett’s esophagus are currently made by duodenal contents reflux model. In the analysis of tumor progression using human esophageal and gastric carcinomas, our stance of research is characterized by microdissection of tumor tissues for comprehensive genomic and expression analyses, mapping of the findings in the whole tumor and reconstruction of the process of tumor development. Cell kinetic and quantitative approaches are also made on the basis of morphologic analysis. Recently our research field has been expanded to breast and colorectal tumors.
